Front Royal's busiest Halloween events from Friday, Oct. 23, through Saturday, Oct. 31, happen in places built for something else. The airport ramp usually holds parked planes. The county government center's lot is used for county business. The gazebo at Main and Chester streets holds the Sunday farmers market, and the campfire ring at Shenandoah River State Park serves RV campers. Across those nine days, each of them puts on a costume.
That shapes how the week plays out. These events follow the schedules, rules and staff of the places hosting them, so the details matter more than usual: pilots have to register, the wagon rides at the state park need preregistration, and some daytime road work sits near the river. Here is the week in order of where it happens.
On Saturday, Oct. 24, the Front Royal-Warren County Airport holds its fall event and pumpkin drop from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Royal Examiner lists airplanes, pilots, trick-or-treating, children's activities and food on the day's program.
The drop is the finale and starts around 1 p.m. Pilots fly over a target and try to land a pumpkin as close to it as they can. Airport Commission member John Bert told the Royal Examiner that pilots must register and attend a mandatory safety briefing before they can take part. He described the target this way: "We'll put a little witch out there in the grass and a little target. Whoever gets the closest wins the prize."
Spectators watch from a separate area that keeps them a safe distance from the flying while still giving a good view. Fellow commission member Eric von Wiesendonk will act as master of ceremonies and talk about the planes and pilots during each attempt. Julie van Jaarsveld, co-owner and co-founder of Skydive Front Royal, told the paper, "It's like no other event in Warren County."
Get there early if you want to see the planes. Visiting pilots can fly in between 8 and 9 a.m. and park on the ramp for static displays, and the gates open to the public at 9.
The gazebo at Main Street and Chester Street has the fullest schedule of the week. On Sunday, Oct. 25, the Town of Front Royal community calendar shows Farm to Market on Main there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the FR Front Runners Sunday Run meets at the same spot at 9:45 a.m.
Six days later the same corner hosts Hometown Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 4 to 6 p.m. That two-hour window ends early, which gives families time to get from downtown to the evening events below.
A few doors down, Royal Cinemas at 117 E. Main St. will show a We the Wine People special presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m. It isn't a Halloween event, but it fills the quiet middle of the week.
Front Royal has two trunk or treats this year, and their venues have little in common.
The first one comes with a ballgame. The Halloween Wiffle Ball Games & Trunk or Treat runs Sunday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m. The town's listing gives no street address, so check the event page before you go.
The second is put on by the people who run the county. Warren County Employees Present the 2nd Annual Trunk or Treat takes place Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Warren County Government Center, 220 N. Commerce Ave. It's the event's second year, and it puts treat tables in the same lot residents use for county business.
Shenandoah River State Park has events on both ends of the week. On Saturday, Oct. 24, and Sunday, Oct. 25, the park offers a Fall Foliage Wagon Ride from 11 a.m. to noon, leaving from the River Bend Discovery Center at 132 Campground Rd. in Bentonville. Virginia State Parks lists the cost as $5 per person plus the standard parking fee, and preregistration is required. Seating is limited. If you're planning around the Saturday pumpkin drop, the ride ends at noon and the drop starts around 1 p.m.
How much color you'll see is still uncertain. The Virginia DCR northern foliage report dated Oct. 15 described early yellows, oranges and deep reds at the park, with many trees still green. The weekend after the report is a reasonable bet for more color, though the leaves keep their own schedule.
On Halloween night the park returns with the Ghosts of VA State Parks Campfire from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the RV Campground Firepit, 350 Daughter of Stars Dr. It begins half an hour after Hometown Halloween ends downtown.
The week's one late-night event is out in the farm country along the South Fork. The Harvest of Horror Trail and Corn Maze at South River Farm, 2310 Rivermont Dr., has four nights left: Friday, Oct. 23; Saturday, Oct. 24; Friday, Oct. 30; and Saturday, Oct. 31. Each runs from 7 to 10 p.m. The town's listing links to a separate ticket page and doesn't print a price there.
Rivermont Drive is also a work zone right now. In its Warren County traffic alert, VDOT listed new flagger traffic control on Route 619 between Route 679, Catlett Mountain Road, and Route 340, for bridge work over the South Fork Shenandoah River. The flaggers work from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The corn maze is open only on Friday and Saturday nights, so the posted flagger hours and the maze hours don't overlap. Weekday trips across that bridge are the ones to plan around.
The same alert lists other overnight closures this month:
VDOT says scheduled work can shift with weather and material supply, so check its live updates before a late drive home on Winchester Road.

If your front steps still need decorating before Saturday, the old Horton's Nursery north of town toward Winchester has new owners. The Royal Examiner reports that Fable Greenhouse and Gardens has taken over the roughly 10-acre site at 2731 Front Royal Pike. Owner Brad Minardi is restocking its greenhouses with mums, pansies, ornamental kale, cabbage, dusty miller, and pumpkins in orange and other colors.
The mums on the benches were grown on the property over the summer. "We are growing pretty much all the mums here on site now," Minardi told the paper. The back half of the greenhouses now works as a growing operation. He plans to stay open through the holidays with live Christmas trees, wreaths and garland. Minardi also said Samuels Public Library is expected to visit around Halloween for a spooky-story reading for children, so watch the library's calendar for a date. The walking trail, workshops and food trucks he mentioned are longer-term plans for next spring and summer.
